SAMATIA ISLAND: WHAT PARADISE LOOKS LIKE
Samatian is a fully hosted lodge on a private island in Lake Baringo, part of the Great Rift Valley, and pehe 30-acre Private Island is situated on the northern side of Lake Baringo, renowned for its spectacular sunsets. There are breathtaking views across the waters of the lake towards the wild and rugged Northern Frontier District.
Blended with the wild elements of nature on the shores of Lake Baringo. This enormous fresh water lake brings life to the valley, and besides being home to a number of organisms, brings you to the island of Samatian.
In total there are four large double rooms with en-suite bathrooms, one large open-plan two-bedroom family cottage with en-suite bathrooms and one large two-bedroom cottage with a shared bathroom. All the thatched rooms are extremely comfortable with views out over the lake and the Rift Valley landscape, and some have private open-air baths or showers hidden away in the trees or rocks.
Breakfasts consist of fresh fruit, cereals and a selection of cooked breakfast classics, while the buffet lunches are prepared using fresh, local ingredients.
Three-course dinners are served under the stars, and the chefs can cater for all food preferences or allergies.Days that can be as relaxing or as active as you wish. If it's the latter, then Lake Baringo is home to a host of birds, many mammals and a fascinating tribal culture. The lodge can arrange boat trips to cruise around rugged islands dotted with acacia and fig trees and home to birds, crocodiles, monitor lizards and hippos.
Alternatively, visit Baringo's hot springs or a local Pokot or Njemps tribal village; see huge stands (one of our favorite collective nouns) of flamingos on nearby Lake Bogoria; have a picnic breakfast; fish, canoe or mountain bike around the island and finally enjoy a well-earned sundowner cocktail on a nearby beach. If you really want to splash out, we can also arrange massage & beauty treatments, and scenic flights and helicopter transfers.
Options trips can be organized to Bogoria and
Tugen hills. Excursions can also be organized to Kidepo springs. This
springs have ordinary hot waterfalls. You can also drive to
neighboring wildlife conservancies.Sunsets on the lake Baringo are a memorable
experience.
Finally, a word on the conservation element. Owners Ross and Caro Withey
were heavily involved in the Ruko Community Wildlife Trust (RCWT) after clashes
between the Pokot and Njemps brought their elders to the area looking for an
urgent solution to an on-going tribal conflict. Working in conjunction with the
Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), Ruko is an equitable partnership between the
Njemps and Pokot communities of Lake Baringo, whose aim is to restore and
protect the region for the benefit of its wildlife and its communities.
Perfect
for anyone looking for intimacy and privacy
