When growing up, I  have often heard the good advice, “Don’t burn the bridges behind you, in case you have to go back.” The advice meant that if you were quitting a job, leave under good circumstances, in case you had to work there again or if they had to give you a reference. If it was the end of the school year, it would be wise to leave in good standing with all the students in case you had to share classes with them next year. If you were moving out of the neighborhood, it would be good to leave a good impression with your neighbors rather than leaving them with a bad one of you. Back in my early teenies  (4years ago) I was challenged by a mentor of mine to achieve a certain target in my life. I think you bring up a point that folks are faced with time and time again. I always share the story of a guy i know . He's been an accountant for almost 15 years, and he's always been apathetic to his work and has always told me he's just "working to retire". When I asked him why he doesn't quit and do something else, his response was that he's been doing what he does for so long, and it just "is what it is," and that he doesn't know what else he would do.
